Fetal Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) Project

History:

Los Angeles County FIMR Project is one of the 12 California county programs implemented in 1994 to address the problem of fetal and infant death in areas with high rates of perinatal mortality.


Health Problems:

High infants and fetal mortality rate


Goal:

To enhance the health of Los Angeles County infants and their mothers


Objectives:
  • To examine local factors contributing to fetal, neonatal, and post-neonatal deaths
  • To develop and implement interventions responding to identified needs.

Activities/Services:

  • Review death certificates: African Americans, Black immigrants: 15 targeted zip codes
  • Review medical, hospital records
  • Conduct home visit
  • Provide grief support and interventions
  • Develop written case summaries
  • Present case summaries to Technical Review Panel (TRP) of multi-disciplinary health professionals for review and identification of preventable factors
  • Assemble recommendations of TRP
  • Present TRP recommendations to Community Advisory Group (CAG)
  • Develop implementation strategies



Eligibility/Target Population Review death certificates of African American and Black immigrant fetal, neonatal, and post-neonatal deaths from 15 targeted zip codes

Maternal Mortality in Los Angeles County 1994-1996. - All 63 cases of identified maternal deaths of Los Angeles County residents for the years 1994-96 were reviewed. The purpose of the review was to identify the causes and contributing factors related to maternal deaths and to find ways to reduce the number of preventable pregnancy-related deaths.
