Rabid bats are found every year in Los Angeles County.

The map at right show locations where rabid bats were found in 2024. Note that areas on the maps without red stars can still have rabid bats. Rabid bat #1 is not shown since it was originally found in Riverside County. Red stars represent bats that have tested positive for rabies after they were found near people or pets, then reported to Animal Control and tested by Public Health.

Rabid Bats found in Los Angeles County in 2024:

1. Altadena.  February.  Bat originally found on ground in Moreno Valley in Riverside County, brought to location in Altadena.

2. Azusa. April. Bat found alive on patio outside of an apartment. A dog chewed on the bat.

3. Santa Clarita.  May.  Bat found dead on the ground on the outside patio of a house.

4. Burbank. May. bat found alive on sidewalk, trying to fly. Found very close to entrance to an elementary school.

5. Santa Clarita. May. Bat found dead outside a home. Two dogs had possible contact.

6. Santa Clarita.  June.  Bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

7. Duarte.  July.  Bat found alive on the sidewalk in an apartment complex.

8. Lake Hughes. July. Bat found inside a location where multiple people had been sleeping.

9. Sylmar. July. Found on the driveway of a home.

10. Stevenson Ranch. July. Bat seen flying into a pool before being removed with a pool net.

11. Palmdale.  July.  Bat found alive on the ground on the outside patio of a house.

12. Topanga.  July.  Bat found alive on the ground at a school.

13. Santa Clarita.  July.  Bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

14. Santa Clarita.  July.  Bat found dead on the driveway of a home.

15. Sylmar.  July.  Bat found alive on the front porch of a home. 

16. Stevenson Ranch.  July.  Bat found under a plaque on the front door on the outside of a home.

17. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat found dead in the backyard of a home.

18. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat was seen dropping to the ground from behind a shutter on the outside of a house.

19. Calabasas/Malibu.    August.  Bat found alive in a backyard pool.

20. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat found dead by the mailboxes at an apartment complex. 

21. Malibu.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground of an outdoor patio of a home.

22. Palmdale.  August.  Bat found alive outside of a home.  A dog may have had contact with the bat.

23. Sherman Oaks.  August.  Bat found alive at a shopping plaza.

24. Granada Hills.  August.  Bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

25. Duarte.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground in the courtyard of an apartment complex.

26. Calabasas.  August.  Bat found alive in the backyard of a home.

27. Woodland Hills.  August.  Bat found dead in the backyard of a home.  A dog had contact with the bat.

28. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat found alive in the garage of a home.

29. Northridge.  August.  Bat found alive on the driveway of a home.

30. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground next to a garage.

31. Porter Ranch.  August.  Bat found dead in the front yard of a home.

32. Glendale.  August.  Bat found alive in the backyard of a home.  A dog may have had contact with the bat.

33. Altadena.  August.  Bat found alive outside of a home hanging on a rock wall.

34. Altadena.  August.  Bat originally found in an outdoor water fountain at a home in San Bernardino County, brought to location in Altadena.

35. Woodland Hills.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground on the sidewalk at the entrance to a business.

36. Arcadia.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground on the driveway of a house.

37. Santa Clarita.  August.  Bat found alive on a tree in the front yard of a home.

38. Tarzana.  August.  Bat found alive on the ground in the backyard of a home.  A dog may have had contact with the bat.

39. Santa Clarita.  September.  Bat found alive on the driveway of a home.

40. Santa Clarita.  September.  Bat found alive clinging to the outside wall of a home next to a sliding door.

41. Santa Clarita.  September.  Bat found alive clinging to the outside wall in the hallway of an apartment complex. 

42. Santa Clarita.  September.  Bat found alive hanging over a garage at a home and then later found on the ground.

44. Glendale.  September.  Bat found dead inside of an office building.

47. Woodland Hills.  October.  Bat found alive inside of a home.  A dog may have had contact with the bat.
