Why focus on obesity in people and pets?
Obesity is a major health issue in the U.S.—and our pets are following in our footsteps. An estimated ~50% of dogs and cats are overweight or obese.
Research suggests there may be a link between obesity in humans and dogs—we often share habits. The upside: pets can also help people be more active.
Facts in Los Angeles County
- About 50% of people in LA County are considered overweight.
- Major causes of pet obesity mirror people: too little exercise and improper diet (e.g., free‑feeding encourages overeating).
- Many owners don’t recognize when a pet is overweight — if you can’t feel ribs, it’s time to adjust feeding.
- Obesity increases risk for diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease in people and pets.
What you can do for you and your pet
- Talk to your veterinarian about healthy weight and diet for your pet.
- Feed appropriately:
- Consult your veterinarian before starting a weight‑loss plan for your pet.
- Don't give your pet table scraps and people food.
- Measure portions; follow the label as a starting point and adjust with your vet’s guidance.
- Exercise together:
- Check with your vet first before beginning an exercise plan.
- Goal for dogs: about 30 minutes of moderate activity daily (adjust per your vet).
- Walking, jogging, or hiking with your dog can help both of you stay healthy.
