What is Gender Based Violence?
Sexual and gender based violence (GBV) refers to any act that is perpetuated against a person's will and is based
on gender norms and unequal power relationships. It encompasses threats of violence and coercion.
It can be physical, emotional, psychological, or sexual in nature, and can take the form of a denial of resources or
access to services.

The terms "gender-based violence" (GBV) and "violence against women" (VAW) are often used interchangeably,
since most gender-based violence is perpetuated by men against women. GBV, however, includes violence against
men, boys, and/or those with gender-nonconforming identities. As such, VAW is one type of GBV.

The Office of Women's Health addresses several forms of violence. Click on the buttons below to find out more about each issue.
