Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)

Table 10 presents cumulative numbers of persons diagnosed with Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) in SPA 6 as of March 31, 2002. These numbers include persons who were diagnosed with AIDS since 1981 when Los Angeles County started counting AIDS cases, whether these persons have died of AIDS or are still living with AIDS. In the entire SPA, the cumulative number of persons diagnosed with AIDS was 4099, a rate of 387 cases per 100,000 population. Of the total AIDS cases, 3,457 (84%) were males and 642 (16%) were females. Sixty-seven percent of SPA 6 residents diagnosed with AIDS were African American and about 27% were Latino. The racial/ethnic group of the remaining AIDS cases is unknown because of suppressing the numbers less than 5.

Male-to-male sexual contact (MSM) was the likely mode of transmission for 63% of the men diagnosed with AIDS, while injection drug use (IDU) was the likely mode of transmission for 10% of males diagnosed with AIDS. The racial/ethnic distribution of men acquiring AIDS through male-to-male sexual contact was 67% African American, 25% Latino, 7% White, slightly less than 1% from other racial/ethnic groups, and a few with unknown race/ethnicity.

The number of women diagnosed with AIDS who acquired the disease through a heterosexual contact was 285. Of these, 188 were African Americans and 83 were Latinas constituting 29% and 13% of all women diagnosed with AIDS in SPA 6, respectively.

Table 11 presents both the cumulative numbers of persons diagnosed with AIDS and the numbers of persons living with AIDS in the communities of SPA 6. The total number of AIDS cases in this table is less than the total number reported in Table 10 because data presented in this table were collected by zip codes. When the number of AIDS cases in a zip code is less than five, for confidentiality purposes, the number is suppressed and an asterisk is placed at that location instead, thus leading to a lower total for the entire SPA.

Hyde Park had the highest number of cumulative AIDS cases in SPA 6 with 489 cases. It was followed by Exposition Park with 434, Compton with 356, South Vermont with 334, South Central Los Angeles with 323, and Adams with 316 cumulative AIDS cases. Cumulative numbers of persons diagnosed with AIDS ranged from 200 to 300 in the communities of Humphry, Jefferson Park, and the Crenshaw District.

The Crenshaw District had the highest rate of cumulative AIDS cases per 100,000 population, with a rate of 843. It was followed by the communities of Adams with a rate of 778, Leimert Park with a rate of 686, Hyde Park with a rate of 618, Jefferson Park with a rate of 548, and Humphry with a rate of 458 cumulative AIDS cases per 100,000 population.

With regards to persons living with AIDS, the total number in the entire SPA was 1,606, corresponding to a rate of 152 per 100,000 population. The community of Exposition Park had the highest number of persons living with AIDS with 171 persons. It was followed by Hyde Park with 164, South Central Los Angeles with 151, South Vermont with 150, and Compton with 139 persons living with AIDS.

The Crenshaw District had the highest rate of persons living with AIDS, with a rate of 324 per 100,000 population. It was followed by Adams with a rate of 313; Leimert Park with a rate of 223; and Humphry as well as Hyde Park, each with a rate of 207 persons living with AIDS per 100,000 population.

Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs)

The legally reportable sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in the State of California include Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. During 2000, there were 9,208 SPA 6 residents diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (Table 12). This was a case rate of 870 per 100,000 population. Of the 9,208 cases, 6,243 (68%) were females and 2,965 (32%) were males. Seventy-three percent of the persons diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease suffered from Chlamydia, 26% had Gonorrhea, and 1% had Syphilis. In addition, Chlamydia cases accounted for 80% of sexually transmitted diseases diagnosed among women and 60% of STD cases diagnosed among men. Some individuals may have been diagnosed with more than one STD; in this situation, these persons would have been counted twice.

During 2000, African Americans represented 42% of Chlamydia cases, 67% of Gonorrhea cases, and 37% of Syphilis cases in SPA 6. They were followed by Latinos constituting 30% of Chlamydia cases, 9% of Gonorrhea cases, and 56% of Syphilis cases. Whites made up slightly over 1% of each of the sexually transmitted diseases in SPA 6. The remaining racial/ethnic groups represented small proportions of STD cases. The ethnicity of 25% of SPA 6 residents diagnosed with STDs during 2000 was unknown.

Table 13 reports sexually transmitted diseases by communities in SPA 6 during 2000. The City of Compton had a much higher number of STD cases than other communities, with 1,199. The city was followed by Hyde Park with 853, Exposition Park with 791, South Central Los Angeles with 734, and Humphry with 628 cases of STDs. Watts had the highest rate of STDs per 100,000 population, with a rate of 1,432. This community was followed by Leimert Park, Humphry, Crenshaw District, and West Compton/Los Angeles County, with rates of 1,228, 1224, 1144, and 1,087 STD cases per 100,000 population, respectively.

Chlamydia was the most frequently diagnosed STD in SPA 6, with 6,308 cases diagnosed during 2000. This represented a case rate of 596 per 100,000 population. The Chlamydia rate in Los Angeles County was 315 cases per 100,000 population. Highest number of Chlamydia cases existed among residents of the City of Compton, with 895 cases. The city was followed by Exposition Park with 602, South Central Los Angeles with 590, Hyde Park with 564, Humphry with 450, South Vermont with 427, and Watts with 419 cases of Chlamydia during 2000. Rates of Chlamydia per 100,000 population were highest in Watts, Humphry, and Leimert Park with rates of 1,022, 877, and 845, respectively. These communities were followed by the Crenshaw District, West Compton/Los Angeles County, and Hyde Park with rates of 771, 720, and 713 Chlamydia cases per 100,000 population, respectively.

During 2000, there were 2,228 cases of Gonorrhea diagnosed in SPA 6. This represents a case rate of 211 per 100,000 population. The Gonorrhea rate in Los Angeles County was 74 cases per 100,000 population. The highest number of Gonorrhea cases existed in Compton and Hyde Park with 292 and 281 cases, respectively. These communities were followed by Exposition Park with 185, Willowbrook with 174, and Humphry with 172 Gonorrhea cases during 2000. The rate of Gonorrhea per 100,000 population was highest in Watts, with a rate of 407. This community was followed by Willowbrook, Leimert Park, and the Crenshaw District, with rates of 384, 383, and 370 Gonorrhea cases per 100,000 population, respectively.

There were 76 cases of Syphilis infections diagnosed in the communities of SPA 6 during 2000. This represents a case rate of 7 per 100,000 population. The Syphilis rate in Los Angeles County was 3.8 cases per 100,000 population. The highest number of Syphilis cases diagnosed during 2000 occurred among residents of South Central Los Angeles with 17 cases. This community was followed by Compton and Hyde park, with 12 and 8 Syphilis cases, respectively. The communities of Florence, Humphry, and South Vermont, each had 6 cases of Syphilis during 2000. There were zero cases of Syphilis in three of the 16 communities in SPA 6. The numbers of Syphilis cases in the communities of SPA 6 were too small to allow meaningful Syphilis case rate calculation.

Tuberculosis (TB)

During 2000, there were 156 Tuberculosis (TB) cases in SPA 6 (Table 14). Males represented 64% of TB cases and females constituted 36%. Ten percent of TB cases in SPA 6 were less than 15 years of age, 43% were 15 to 44 years old, 35% were 45 to 64 years of age, and 12% were 65 years and over. The racial/ethnic distribution of TB cases was 58% Latino, 36% African American, 4% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2% White.

Table 14 also reports TB cases by country of birth. Forty-six percent of persons diagnosed with TB were born in the United States, while 54% were foreign- born. Thirty-three percent were born in Mexico, 6% were born in each of El Salvador and Guatemala, about 3% in Belize, and 6% were born in other countries. The case rate for TB disease in SPA 6 was 14.7 per 100,000 population. TB rate in Los Angeles County was 10.8 per 100,000 population.
