Events and Training Workshops
The Nutrition/Physical Activity Initiative hosts and participates in a variety of events to increase the awareness of nutritious and healthy eating, physical activity and related information.
Providing educational materials from credible and diverse sources and organizations helps us enrich the experience of our health fair audience.
Past health topics have included: general nutrition and physical activity education, promotion of fruits and vegetables, guidance on the new USDA food pyramid and healthy lifestyles promotion.
Multi-disciplinary Collaboration:
The Nutrition and Physical Activity Initiative is grateful to have the participation of diverse members from Public Health and Clinical Nursing, Nutrition and Information Dissemination.
Food Security Training:
Honored speaker, Laurel Eu, Public Affairs Specialist from the US Food and Drug Administration, focused on foodborne risks for consumers and health professionals.
Ms. Eu's presentation included information on how the environment, food distribution and global trade can increase the risk of foodborne illnesses.
Foodborne illnesses can impact large numbers of people and communities. Some recent examples include: Avian Flu, Mad Cow Disease and Norwalk Viruses (as found on cruise ships).
