SPA 4 Public Health Nurse, Erika Goff, is featured
in an August 2006 news article along with colleagues Alejandro Novelo and
Marisol Fortades. The article examines the vital role
that Public Health Nurses have in fighting communicable diseases. It
also highlights public health challenges facing Los Angeles County
clinics and staff, especially in the SPA 4 Skid Row area. Read

- SPA 4 Staff Recognition
for Project YIMBY
Angela Lozano, Frank Ramirez and Patricia Alexander were recognized at
the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting for their participation in
Project YIMBY on January 17, 2006. 250 homeless persons were
given flu shots, health information and STD screenings during a National
Homeless day in December. Helping with STD screenings were Public Health
Investigators from Hollywood-Wilshire Health Center including: Frank
Ramirez, Sunny Tefera and Elvia Coronel. Providing health information and
flu shots were Public Health Nurses including: Veretta Elmore, Monica
Flores, Doreen Steiger and Fariba Yengejeae. Patricia Alexander represented
the Community Liaison Program. Thank you for your involvement on a
critical issue.

- Medicare Part D
Prescription Drug Coverage
Medicare Part D is a new prescription drug plan offered by Medicare. Its
benefits can include prescription drug coverage and preventative health
screenings. “Extra Help” is available for limited income individuals and
different organizations are offering Medicare Part D plans. Contact
the Los Angeles Access to Benefits Coalition for assistance with enrolling

- Recognizing the Central
Health Center Staff for Immune Globulin Response
The leadership and response demonstrated by nursing supervision and
public health nurses at Central Health Center an be attributed to great the
wonderful work of: Liz Plantilla, PHNS for organizing the weekend clinic and
on-going support; Maria Lopez, SCN for providing direction for clinical
activities; and Alex Novelo, PHNS, Leticia Reyna-Terry, PHNS, and Theresa
Tse, PHNS for field activities. Thank you all for demonstrating outstanding
teamwork!

of the Year: Angela Lozano, Nurse Manager for Hollywood-Wilshire Health
Center
Congratulations to Angela Lozano for being recognized as the LA County
Public Health Employee of the Year and the LA County Employee of the Month
for December! Her achievements in health access and community outreach
were highlighted at the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting on
12/20/2005. Angela was awarded a personalized scroll and pin to
accompany her engraved plaque. Thank you and congratulations on a
wonderful achievement.

recognized as being Outstanding Employees in Public Health
Congratulations Angela Lozano and David Caley for
being awarded the 2005 Outstanding Public Health Employee Award. And a
congratulations to Sue Kim for being recognized as a 2005 Outstanding
Employee Honoree. Our three staff members are being recognized as
demonstrating "exceptional and outstanding work performance."
