Los Angeles County Market Match |
Background![]() The American Rescue Plan (ARP) Act of 2021 provided funding for Los Angeles County to build an equitable economic recovery from the devastating economic effects caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program received ARP funding to implement the Market Match program. The design of the program is aligned with the County of Los Angeles Anti-Racism, Diversity and Inclusion Initiative to ensure that we are prioritizing communities who were most impacted by the pandemic. Los Angeles County Market MatchMarket Match is a program for people on CalFresh (formerly known as food stamps) and the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) to help them buy nutrient dense food at participating farmers markets. For every dollar of CalFresh or WIC benefits, the program gives an extra $1 in Market Match tokens or vouchers that can be used to buy fruits and vegetables. Market Match is currently operated in over 50 farmers markets across Los Angeles County. This program also supports local farmers and businesses and promotes sustainable food systems. Through ARP funding, the goal of the Los Angeles County Market Match program is to increase household food security in Los Angeles County by ensuring that residents experiencing poverty and participating in federal food assistance programs, such as CalFresh or WIC have increased purchasing power for healthy foods. These additional funds have expanded Market Match to an additional 15 farmers markets and brick-and-mortar locations where fresh fruits and vegetables are sold to ensure that CalFresh and/or WIC recipients can purchase more healthy foods with their benefits. The Los Angeles County Market Match program is implemented in historically under-resourced communities across the County, specifically in areas with the highest rates of CalFresh cases per census tract and in historically redlined neighborhoods. The Nutrition and Physical Activity program partners with Food Access LA to deliver this program in Los Angeles County. Find Market Match locations at this webpage: https://bit.ly/ARPMarketMatch .
