LA County Food Redistribution Project |
BackgroundIn 2021, The Nutrition and Physical Activity Program partnered with Copia, an existing mobile food recovery app, to facilitate the donation of surplus food to community-based organizations. With new funding from Care First Community Investment , we have launched a new program with Copia to work with businesses to redistribute surplus food and decrease the prevalence of food insecurity among justice-impacted areas of Los Angeles County. Because the project will include working with businesses/organizations within incorporated cities, it complements Public Works’ Food Donation and Recovery Outreach Program (DROP) which operates in Unincorporated areas in LA County. This synergy should help city and county public works agencies meet the California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle)’s edible food recovery reporting requirements. How Businesess Can Apply for Free Food Donation Services![]() Through this funding, businesses will benefit from a 12-month free Copia membership subscription, which includes 72 donation pick-ups and delivery of surplus edible food to nonprofit organizations. Businesses seeking assistance in managing their surplus food can apply for a free Copia subscription by completing the "Getting to Know You" form.
