Asthma is a very common condition in Los Angeles County - research
among school children in urban Los Angeles indicates that 14% are
likely to have asthma. Much is known about what
triggers
asthma and the
measures
that have proven effective in managing the disease, and we are
learning more everyday. Because episodes of asthma symptoms can be
effectively managed and prevented with proper medical care, it is
extremely important that children with asthma receive high quality
health care. The Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Programs
(MCAH) is working to improve outcomes for children with asthma by
working with community stakeholders to improve the management of
asthma, develop more effective systems of care, and decrease
exposure to environmental triggers of asthma.
- Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County
MCAH provides staff support to the Asthma Coalition of
Los Angeles County, an organization whose mission is "to
bring together asthma prevention and clinical care
stakeholders to provide a powerful voice for policy and
systems change related to asthma diagnosis and management,
access to quality care, and indoor and outdoor air quality
in Los Angeles County." Coalition membership is open to all
interested parties.

The Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County developed the
“Asthma Call to Action” with input from numerous experts in
the field, including clinical care professionals,
environmental policy advocates, school and childcare
experts, and asthma researchers. This policy paper reviews
the impact of asthma on county residents, discusses the
factors that contribute to this disease, and provides
recommendations for improving asthma outcomes countywide.
Its purpose is to raise awareness among public officials,
community leaders, and those working to improve
asthma-related systems of care, and serve as a catalyst for
people to come together to implement the proposed
recommendations.

On May 6, 2006, the Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles
County held its second annual World Asthma Day event, billed
as a community day of action to unite children, adults, and
advocates working to combat asthma in Los Angeles County.
This year's theme was "Breathe Clean," which emphasizes the
link between asthma outcomes and air quality, both indoor
(in homes, schools, and workplaces) and outdoor. Activities
included a neighborhood march, speakers, games for children,
and a health education fair. The event also included the
official release of the Coalition's "Call to Action"
document, which was presented to Los Angeles City
Councilmember Jan Perry.
