Asthma Basics: Asthma is a chronic disease affecting the airways that makes breathing difficult. Asthma cannot be cured, but it can be controlled and managed. The inside walls of the airways are inflamed and can react to certain "triggers," reducing air flow to the lungs. Millions of people who have asthma live healthy, productive lives.

What Causes Asthma? Asthma is caused by both genetic and environmental factors.

What is an Asthma Attack? An asthma attack occurs when the muscles around the airways tighten, restricting the amount of air going to the lungs, and making it harder to breathe. Signs and symptoms of an asthma attack may include wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and trouble breathing.
