The Coalition is a broad-based comprehensive coalition of experts from community-based organizations, advocacy groups, universities, government entities, school districts, environmental groups, health plans, hospitals and clinics in Los Angeles County.

Mission: The Asthma Coalition of Los Angeles County is a collective, powerful voice for policy and systems change to prevent, minimize and manage the burden of asthma.

Goals: The document "Controlling Asthma in Los Angeles: A Call to Action" set the foundation for the goals of the Asthma Coalition. The current Strategic Plan outlines the Coalition's goals to advocate for policy and systems changes in order to accomplish the following:

1. Increase access to and improve quality of health care;
2. Improve indoor air quality in homes;
3. Improve asthma management in schools;
4. Improve outdoor air quality;

In addition, through each of the above goals, the Coalition strives to address racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities and promote research related to asthma.

United States:

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases among children.¹

About 1 in 10 children (10%) have asthma.²

About 1 in 12 adults (8%) have asthma.²

More boys (10%) than girls (9%) have asthma.²

More women (10%) than men (6%) have asthma.²

Among both children and adults, asthma is more common among non-Hispanic Blacks than non-Hispanic Whites and Hispanics overall.²

California:

Over 530,000 children (6%) have asthma.³

2.3 million adults (8%) have asthma.⁴

Asthma is most common among non-Hispanic Black children and adults.

About 1 in 11 Black children have asthma, compared to 1 in 13 White children and 1 in 15 Hispanic children.⁵

Los Angeles County:

About 1 in 11 children (9%) have asthma.⁶

About 1 in 14 adults (6%) have asthma.⁷

Asthma rates have gone up over the last decade for both Hispanic and non-Hispanic Black children.⁶

Black children have the highest rates of asthma (25%) compared to Hispanic children (8%), non-Hispanic White children (7%), and Asian/Pacific Islander children (4%).⁶

Among adults, non-Hispanic Blacks have the highest rates of asthma (10%), followed by non-Hispanic Whites (8%), Hispanics and Asian/Pacific Islanders (5%).⁷
