About Us

2. Assume the positive in your partner

People get hung-up on two common relationship myths:

1. "Fighting leads to divorce". This is not true, as disagreements are natural. However it is the “approach” to how you respond to someone that upsets you or the “approach” you use to discuss how your needs are not being met.

2. "Common interests will keep you together". Again, not true. Whether you have common interests, if you mistreat the other person, will not result in happiness.

Practice giving your partner the benefit of the doubt. This means, never assume the negative in your partner. Remember if they have chosen to be with you, love you, and share their life with you, likely they are not choosing to hurt you by the things they might say, at least not usually on purpose. So do not assume. Instead ask them what they might mean and to clarify. This is being positive and by practicing being thankful increases your ability to get through hard times together. Being thankful also reminds us who our relationship is so important and never takes the other person for granted. This helps us to remember why we have chosen to be with each other and what things we enjoy about the other most (M.J. Ryan, Attitudes of Gratitude in Love (2002).

Next, 3. Give thanks to your partner
