Los Angeles County Regional Gang Violence Reduction Initiative (GVRI)

On April 6, 2010, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors instructed the Chief Executive Office (CEO) to implement a set of recommendations to address gang violence. These recommendations are being piloted in four demonstration sites (Florence Firestone, Harbor Gateway, Monrovia Duarte, and Pacoima) and include the following overarching strategies:

PREVENTION: prevent individuals and families from becoming involved in gang and/or delinquent activity;

HIGH-RISK/RE-ENTRY: intervene in the lives of individuals and families who have had contact with gangs or the justice system and provide sufficient services and resources to redirect them on a path towards self-sufficiency and mainstream integration; and finally,

SUPPRESSION: to more strategically collaborate with law enforcement to proactively target violence and identify individuals and families who may need and desire assistance.

The recommendations are being phased in over an 18-month period to lay a foundation in each of the four demonstration sites for both immediate and long term action and will result in recommendations for countywide application.  Limited governmental funds necessitated that resources be allocated and more efficiently to achieve INITIATIVE goals. These recommendations assume a heavy reliance on the coordinated efforts of County departments, municipal partners, community organizations, and residents.

IVPP is a partnering with the CEO Office to provide data analysis and assessment support for various aspects of the initiative.
