BACKFLOW PREVENTION DEVICES
The Cross-Connection and Water Pollution Control Program
administers the annual testing of approximately 50,000 backflow prevention devices by
nearly 700 backflow prevention device testers certified by this program. This extensive
record keeping system on backflow prevention device testing, reporting, and data retrieval
is monitored by an intricate data processing program.
The hardware approved and employed in the protection of the
potable water supply from backflow of contaminants is based upon specifications developed
in concert with regulatory agencies, plumbing officials and the manufacturing industry.
The laboratory and field approval process of the Foundation for Cross-Connection Control
and Hydraulic Research at the University of Southern California and the Mechanical Testing
Laboratory of the City of Los Angeles, Department of Building and Safety are essential in
developing a reliable listing of approved backflow preventers. Since all mechanical
devices are subject to failure, the on-going program for the certification and
recertification of backflow prevention device testers and a program of electronic data
processing of backflow prevention device test reporting are critical in maintaining the
integrity of these devices.
A listing of approved backflow preventers, both testable
and non-testable is maintained to provide the public with the most reliable hardware
available.
