West Nile Virus Environmental Surveillance in Los Angeles County The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health conducts a range of environmental surveillance projects to further our understanding of local West Nile virus (WNV) activity.  Bird Surveillance Bird Surveillance: West Nile infected dead birds are indicators of the virus presence. In 2004, viral positive dead birds were recovered from nearly all areas of Los Angeles County. Since then, collection, testing, and documentation of WNV positive dead birds have been ongoing. To learn what type of birds to report see our flyer. Please report dead birds to the State of California's West Nile Virus program at 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473) or by the Internet. Report Dead Birds/Reporte Pajaros Muertos: 1-877-WNV-BIRD (1-877-968-2473) or by the Internet Flyer Mosquito Surveillance Mosquito Surveillance: Like infected dead birds, mosquito surveillance programs operated by Mosquito Abatement Districts statewide help identify the WNV transmission cycle before human cases occur. Mosquito pools comprising of 10 to 50 mosquitoes are trapped and tested for the presence of several mosquito-borne viruses including WNV.
